Employee Spotlight - Scott MacCallum

One of the things that makes Splashtacular such a fantastic water slide company to work with and work for is the employees who treat each and every project they work on like it is the only one. Our employees value client satisfaction, hard work, and a job well-done above all else and it shows in the work that they do.

In order to say thank you to the team members at our water slide company, we like to shine a Splashtacular Spotlight on the people who do so much for our us and our clients. Today, we are proud to introduce you to our industrial designer, Scott MacCallum.

Scott has been with Splashtacular for two and a half years and we are so lucky to have him at our water slide company. Scott is a creative, fun-loving, thoughtful individual and we are fortunate to call him a teammate and friend.

Take a peek into Scott’s life below as he shares his experiences as an employee of our water slide company and beyond!

Name: Scott MacCallum

Hometown: Olathe, KS

Current Residence: Olathe, KS

Splashtacular title: Industrial Designer

How long have you been with Splashtacular and what initially drew you to a water slide company?

I have been with Splashtacular for almost 2 and a half years now. Prior, I had been in real estate, but I had the itch to return to creative design work. I saw the job ad for a Water slide manufacturer in Kansas and knew it was something I wanted to do. I put together a demo waterslide and tower and produced some renders. It was enough to “woo” management. Looking back at all that I’ve picked up about waterslide design, my demo slide definitely would not have been a very fun experience for a rider.

What does a day in your life at Splashtacular look like?

My day begins with coffee… maybe two… it is THE serum of creativity. After I’ve got some caffeine in me, my inner child awakens and thinks of a way he’d like to have fun that day — a custom aquatic play unit themed as a pirate ship. YAR MATEY, please! A waterslide and tower 50 feet high with translucent banding and a sound system playing some funky dance mix…Let’s do this! And the most fun part is rendering the visuals that resemble what you would actually see if it were already in place.

What is your favorite thing about working at a waterslide company?

Getting to have my life-size Chewbacca standing next to my work desk and the jump scares I get when visitors see him for the first time!

What is the most challenging part of your role at the water slide company?

Keeping to a deadline. As a creative person I want something to be 100% perfect, but only have time to bring it to 90 - 95%. That 90 - 95% looks really dang good to your average person, but as the creator I want to keep pouring my heart into a design until it’s right. That last little push to perfection can take a long time and something our aggressive design schedule doesn’t have time to accommodate in my fast-paced role.

Where do you see Splashtacular in 5 years?

I’d like to see us investigate technologies such as screen projections in enclosed flumes and virtual reality to enhance rides as trade show presentations.

What is your best Splashtacular memory?

One of my first renders of a large aquatic play unit in Florida and the opportunity I got to travel to see the finished product. It was so cool to see the final product so close to being what was initially designed - bright colors and all!

Three words to describe Splashtacular?

We make fun!

What was your first job ever?

I worked at a cyber cafe. It didn’t pay more than minimum wage, but I had a lot of fun at the job. I got paid to help people make “personal web pages” on geocities and play video games. I had friends constantly stopping by to play board games and drink smoothies or frozen mochas.

Favorite Hobbies?

I enjoy playing D&D with my friends. and playing for about 20 years with most of the same guys. I also cosplaying Star Wars characters — I’m currently working on my second build of K-2SO from Rogue One and have been making The Mandalorian armor pieces for my friend.

Favorite Movie?

I enjoy watching Star Wars and The Lord of the Rings. It is hard to decide on which is better.

Favorite Food?

Tacos!

One Fun Fact About Yourself!

My personal heaven is Universal Studios in Orlando. I hold annual passes and go with my family whenever I can make it there.
